The light of the flashlight is dimly lit for this night, not bright enough to illuminate anything. The smell of damp dirt and mildew permeates the air, but it’s not unpleasant. I can feel an animal nearby. Maybe a rat? No, it’s bigger than that; some sort of dog-like creature is nearby too. The ground is made up primarily out of hard packed dirt and leaves with occasional clumps of mud or dryer leaf litter dotting the surface occasionally. It makes for good footing as I progress through the woods. I can’t see much else beyond my flashlight, but all of it is slightly illuminated in the light of the moon. The light builds following me, perhaps because I am still walking? I don’t think so. Movements are not coming from just around the next bend in the path; they are coming from behind me. They are steadily getting closer. I stare into the darkness ahead of me, trying to see what is moving toward me. A pair of glowing eyes with irises like black ink spots come into focus, staring back at me. The eyes seem to be on both sides of my line of sight at once...no, they are behind it now... I just can’t see them anymore. The light grows brighter. I turn to the right where the eyes had been, but they are nowhere to be found...just a large, dark shape looming in front of me. I shine the flashlight at the object in front of me but all I can make out are darkened shapes, like blurred shadows fallen on a wall or an open doorway. The light dances across the dark shapes and it seems they are deformities of something primal, with most things blending together into a single great beast that is coming after me with its sharp teeth bared and claws raised in readiness for my flesh. I turn around and see the eyes again, bright light upon the dull darkness. I shine my flashlight towards them and nothing is there. Then they reappear to my rear, looking straight into me as if they are an extension of myself looking back at me through a mirror. I shine my flashlight at them and they appear again to be coming straight for me. The lights slowly start to approach me, circling around me like it’s sizing up its prey for a strike- The glaring light overwhelms my vision as it comes closer and closer still. Like a rush of water, the obscured world around me is illuminated in full definition. The white light is like shining the sun into my eyes, but it’s not coming from above me. It’s coming from everywhere. I can see every leaf and stick on the path beneath me, full surrounding details appear in my view just before I’m enveloped by the blinding light. Even when I close my eyes there is no escaping from it; it permeates my eyelids with its unforgiving beaming rays of sunshine white light. It must be morning already... Flashes of a brown rat scampering between tire tracks on a dirt road come to mind. cfa1e77820
